The question still remains after much debate as to what the problen is with girls wandering about in herds. Courtney Cherry quotes in her thoughtful blog that : "To me, it seems that women are so comfortable/secure that they can bring their friends with them, while men seem insecure and see it as very private." This quote seems quite harsh towards men in general. Perhaps men don't travel in herds because we are secure enough to be by ourselves. We can be in the bathroom with other strangers and not think anything about it, whereas women have to have people that they know around them at all times so as to avoid strangers. Another wise commentator, Jachan DeVol, puts it this way: "Girls just have to go to the bathroom together because they have to keep talking. They have say as much as they can in as little time as they can so why go to the bathroom by yourself when you can spend that time talking to someone too?" Is it that girls must talk ALL the time? Many critics on this issue from both genders argue numerous different ideas. However, what is the real answer to the issue at hand?
The fact is that the issue boils down to seeral different reasons. First off, it is the factor that women don't like conflict. They don't want to have to strike up a convo with a complete stranger, so they feel the urgency to bring another friend to keep them company. Secondly, as Mr. DeVol pointed out, girls have to talk at all times. If you are around a girl, you never experience silence...ever. Rather than lose a few precious minutes of conversation in the bathroom, they think to themselves, why not bring everyone with me and talk there? These are the two pillars to the theory as to why women travel in packs.

Haha-- not sure I agree with your eventual thesis, but you've got the idea of the formatting. :)
ReplyDeleteI think women are just more used to functioning in communities in general... And since girls go into private stalls, none of the "bathroom" part happens in community-- just the talking, conferring, touching up, adjusting outfits stuff when we're out of the stalls. And that's stuff we DO like doing together. However, Courtney's right-- girls go to the bathroom by themselves alone just about as often as they go with an "entourage."
